{"id":379,"date":"2023-10-14T03:58:08","date_gmt":"2023-10-14T03:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glennruscoe.physio\/newswebsite2\/2023\/10\/14\/interdisciplinary-learning-and-hands-on-skills-training-improve-the-management-of-sci-patients-in-pakistan\/"},"modified":"2023-10-14T03:58:08","modified_gmt":"2023-10-14T03:58:08","slug":"interdisciplinary-learning-and-hands-on-skills-training-improve-the-management-of-sci-patients-in-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennruscoe.physio\/newswebsite2\/2023\/10\/14\/interdisciplinary-learning-and-hands-on-skills-training-improve-the-management-of-sci-patients-in-pakistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Interdisciplinary learning and hands-on skills training improve the management of SCI patients in Pakistan."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Interdisciplinary practice in physical rehabilitation is still an evolving concept in Pakistan and rehabilitation professionals, particularly from different provinces, rarely have an opportunity to work together let alone discuss challenges and compare management approaches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/relabhs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ReLAB-HS<\/a> Clinical Skills Training Programme in Pakistan was a 3-month comprehensive training programme covering all aspects of spinal cord injury (SCI) management. Designed to bypass the barriers typically faced by interdisciplinary education and collaboration, the programme successfully brought together 14 rehabilitation professionals from diverse backgrounds including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, and clinical psychology through a range of different mediums.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThank you, I really appreciate the efforts and dedication of the facilitators &amp; ReLAB-HS for organising such an impactful course.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Participants completed weekly online Physiopedia Plus courses, and participated in online discussion forums along with regular mentoring sessions, led by both local and international mentors and aimed at consolidating and contextualising the content covered in the online coursework. Most importantly, the programme included a 3-day in-person training offering a rare opportunity for participants to meet face to face and practise their skills together with real patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This training was not only the first of its kind delivered as part of the ReLAB-HS activities in Pakistan, according to Ilyas Syed, CEO of Paraplegic Centre Peshawar (PCP) where the in-person training was hosted, it was also <strong>the first time a training like this has been implemented \u201c<\/strong><\/span><strong>in the history of Pakistan.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe facilitators find it a very interactive and motivated model of training continued professional education or clinical skills since it is the very first time that interprofessional learning and teaching are both involved.\u201d \u2013 Trainer, PCP<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>PCP is the largest and only centre of its kind in Pakistan which focuses exclusively on the rehabilitation of SCI patients. Attending the in-person training at PCP allowed the participants to learn from the highly skilled and experienced team of rehabilitation professionals at PCP as well as have access to and learn about various types of assistive technology, some of which are produced at the centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was an excellent experience not only for the participants, it was also essential for the PCP team, to test their skills and enhance their capacity.\u201d \u2013 Ilyas Syed, CEO of Paraplegic Centre Peshawar<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Each of the five trainers from PCP that were involved in the in-person training expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of\u00a0 this training, which was not only beneficial to the participants but also a valuable learning experience for the trainers themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is just one of several more clinical skills training programmes planned in the final years of ReLAB-HS activities in Pakistan. These training programmes to develop clinical skills are part of a long-term plan to empower rehabilitation professionals in Pakistan to become mentors and trainers in their workplace and communities alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Having established a strong relationship with PCP and other education providers in Pakistan including Ziauddin University, future training programmes will continue to bring together groups of rehabilitation professionals from diverse backgrounds and provinces in Pakistan. Future training will focus on clinical skills alongside teaching skills and mentoring with the guidance of experienced local and international educators and rehabilitation professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI would like to express my sincere gratitude to team PCP and\u00a0 Relab-HS for conducting the training session.
